Q: Can a girl get pregnant if she is on top and doesn't cum?

A:
Yes. Any time a man comes (ejaculates) inside a woman without a condom or other birth control, she can get pregnant. It doesn't matter what position she was in or whether she cums (has an orgasm).

Q: My penis has pimples on it that won't go away. What should I do?

A:
You should go to the clinic right away. Although it is possible that they are just pimples, if they are painful (itchy or burning) it is possible that you have an STD like herpes. Click here for a list of Santa Cruz County clinics and call for an appointment today. If you don't live in Santa Cruz, click here to find a Planned Parenthood clinic near you.

Also, if you are having sex, it is very important that you use condoms so that you don't put your partner at risk. Make sure that the condom completely covers the pimples.

Q: If she is a virgin and has never gotten her period, do we need to use a condom?

A:
Yes. If either of you has had sexual contact (including oral or anal sex), you could have an STD.

Also, a girl can get pregnant just before her first period. Since you don't know when her first period will come, you need to use a condom to prevent pregnancy.

Q: Does it hurt the first time you have sex? And when your "cherry pops," does anything come out?

A:
For some girls, it might hurt a little the first time she has sex. This is usually because of her "cherry" (also called the hymen), a thin piece of skin that can partially cover the opening to the vagina. Not all girls have a hymen, and for some girls it tears before they ever have sex. When it does tear, it doesn't usually come out of the vagina.

In general, sex shouldn't be uncomfortable. If it is, she might need more stimulation or lubrication, or it could mean that she has an STD, especially if she has cramps or other pain after sex.

Q: What is the fluid that leaks out before a guy comes?

A:
That fluid is called pre-cum, or pre-ejaculatory fluid. It is the same as cum, the liquid the comes out of the penis when a guy ejaculates (or comes). This means that it can get someone pregnant or transmit an STD the same as if a guy came.

If you are using condoms to prevent pregnancy or STDs, you need to put one on as soon as you get hard, before the pre-cum leaks out.

Q:
Is it possible for a virgin who has never used drugs or shared needles to have an STD?

A: In order to get an STD, you have to be intimate with someone who is infected with the STD. Here are intimate activities that can transmit STDs:
kissing (herpes)
oral sex (herpes, gonorrhea, chlamydia, syphilis)
vaginal sex (all STDs), anal sex (all STDs)
  • genital-to-genital touching, even without the penis entering the vagina or anus (many STDs including herpes, HPV, and syphilis)
  • touching another person's genitals and then touching
If you have noticed something that's not normal for your body, you should get checked. Even if it's not an STD, it could be something that needs to be treated.

Q: If your cherry doesn't pop are you still a virgin?

A:
A cherry (or hymen) is a thin piece of skin that partially covers the opening of the vagina. Not everyone has a cherry to begin with, and even if she is born with one, it can break very easily from things like riding a horse or a bike or falling down as a kid. Not every girl or woman will bleed or hurt the first time a penis is inside her vagina.

Also, there are lots of different definitions of virginity. Some people feel that if a person has had oral sex done on them, that they aren't a virgin. Other people feel that if they only have anal sex, they are still a virgin. You have to decide for yourself.

The important thing to know is that even if a girl still has her cherry, she could still get an STD or get pregnant.

Q: Can a girl get pregnant if my penis touches the outside of her vagina? What if my penis goes inside her but I don't come (ejaculate) inside?

A:
Yes. If you ejaculate outside of her vagina, sperm can still swim its way inside. Also, before you ejaculate, a little semen comes out (pre-cum). So even if you pull out before you come, the pre-cum can get her pregnancy or give her an STD if you have one.

Q: Can a guy with herpes get a girl pregnant?

A:
Yes, you can still get someone pregnant if you have herpes. You can also give herpes to your sex partner through oral sex, anal sex, or vaginal sex.

When you have an outbreak (open herpes sores), it is important to not let the sores touch your partner's mouth or genitals. If a condom covers the sores, that is good protection. If it doesn't, you should wait to have sex until the sores go away.

Q: My boyfriend and I have had anal sex, and I'm the first person he's been active with (he's my first too), but I think I have an infection/lump. We haven't used a condom.

A:
If you have a lump or something that is different than it usually is, it is important to see a doctor right away. A lump could be an infection, or it could be that your skin got irritated or torn. It is important to use lubrication during anal sex.

Anal sex can transmit STDs, but only if one person already has an STD. Even if you haven't had sex with anyone else, if either of your genitals have touched someone else's genitals, you should both get tested for STDs. And it is possible to get pregnant from anal sex if there is semen (come, cum) near the opening of the vagina, but it is very unlikely.

Q: I had sex willingly but drunk. The kid said we did not use a condom but he has not gone through puberty. Am I at risk for pregnancy?

A:
That's a tricky question, but the bottom line is yes—you should go get tested for pregnancy and for STDs.

There are several issues to consider. Whether or not he had gone through puberty, if he has had any sexual contact before, he could have an STD (sexually transmitted disease). Because you had sex without a condom, you could have been exposed and should get tested.

Puberty takes several years, both for girls and boys. At some point during puberty, a boy starts to make sperm in his testicles (balls). There is no way to know when, so there is no way to know if you could have gotten pregnant. You should take a pregnancy test right away—the sooner you know if you are pregnant, the more options you have, and you can take better care of yourself.

Q: What does it mean if my penis is itching inside, but I wore a condom?

A:
This could mean several things, but it is impossible to tell for sure. You should go do a doctor or clinic right away, before the itching stops.

Itching inside the penis could be a symptom of different kinds of infections—ones that are sexually transmitted and ones that aren't. Also, if your penis touched someone's genitals or mouth before you put the condom on, you could still have been exposed to an STD.

Also, some people are allergic to latex. This allergy doesn't always show up the first time you touch latex, and it can cause itching and other symptoms. Click here for more information.

Q: How do I sperm, cum, or ejaculate? I've tried, but nothing comes out.

A:
Let's start at the beginning. Before a young man can ejaculate (also called “cum” or “sperm”), he must go through puberty.

Puberty happens over many years, usually between the ages of 10 and 18. The body changes in many ways: a young man starts to grow more hair, his voice deepens, get erections (when the penis gets hard), and at some point he will ejaculate for the first time. This often happens at night, and is sometimes called a “wet dream.”

Once a young man is able to get erections and ejaculate, many things can make this happen. Thinking about something sexual, rubbing against pillows or sheets, masturbating (touching your own genitals to make yourself feel good, also called jacking off), or even just a full bladder can cause erections and even ejaculation.

So, back to the question: if you've tried to “sperm” or ejaculate but nothing comes out, it is possible that you have not gone through puberty yet. If you've had erections but haven't ever ejaculated, it might help to masturbate or think about something that gives you an erection.

Q: Will I grow tall if I masturbate?

A:
No. Masturbation will not effect your height. You will probably end up being twice as tall as you were when you were two years old, but height is influenced by a number of factors including genetics, whether you are male or female, and overall health and nutrition.

Q: I am having cramps. Could I be pregnant?

A:
It is important that you see a doctor right away if the cramps are different than normal (more painful, or at a different time of the month).

Cramps could mean many things, including pregnancy, the onset of your menstrual cycle (period), or an infection.
